Description

The FocusMaker DSLR Focusing Tool is a follow focus system that allows you to get fast, smooth, and accurate focusing on virtually any DSLR lens. The FocusMaker mounts on your lens and is comprised of a ruler with incremental focus marks, lens strap, sight, clip-on stops, and handles. It is lightweight at only 80g and fits in most camera bags, making it ideal for small crews or single shooter setups.

The FocusMaker features a half-circle ruler that straps on to the focus ring of your DSLR lens. The ruler offers incremental markings for increased accuracy when obtaining focus marks. A sight mounts on the lens barrel and provides a fixed point for viewing the ruler's measurements. Focus points are marked using the clip-on stops. The stops can be mounted to serve as active hard stops or as passive stops for loose or intermediate focus points. Two handles are provided which attach to the ruler and provide smooth, jitter-free focusing. A travel pouch comes included.

Lens Compatibility:

To give a better overview for anyone in doubt, we intend to build a comprehensive chart containing both most current and discontinued lenses.
Meanwhile, please use the following as a guideline:

In order to work comfortably, we do recommend that your lens to be used with FocusMaker has focusring diameter between 63mm and 91mm (up to 115mm is possible with simple extension) and a bandwidth of 8mm. (See illustration):

Although we have tested the majority of the current Canon lens collection and their Nikon counterparts, we do see that a very few models most likely fall outside convenient use.

- Canon 50mm f1.8:
To be honest, most copies of this lens we have seen (particular if being worn and greasy) will generally create to much work to make it function comfortably with FocusMaker.
The focus ring geometry on this lens make it difficult to add attachment in a simple way.
Most users of existing follow focus systems do already recognize this problem, and quite a number of persistent users have already blogged about workarounds as “focus-mods” by adding rubber bands or similar. Although these additions will with no doubt help the conditions for FocusMaker too, we do not endorse a successful outcome.

- Tilt shift lenses:
The focus ring on most Tilt Shift lenses is actually fine, but the complex body the TS lenses makes the mounting of the Sight mostly impossible.

- Super tele lenses:
Lenses with a focusring diameter beyond 92mm would need an extension of the elastic strap or a longer strap. We have used it up to 115mm focus ring diameter.
We can supply extras upon request or you can easily extend yourself with a rubber band. But note that some lenses have permanent tripod/gimbal mount that might not allow FocusMaker to rotate fully around the lens.

Pancake lenses:
Although it has been a concern for many users, whether pancake lenses will work, we have used both the Voigtlaender 40mm/f2 and the Canon 40mm/f2.8.
